About
Kia ora! I’m Wendy Hoddinott, a heritage landscape architect with a deep love for the stories of our Aotearoa landscapes. For over almost two decades, I’ve shaped conservation strategies for some of Aotearoa’s most significant landscapes.
Heritage is about the places, objects and spaces that we inherit over time - that make a place unique and give it character. My work is about bringing those connections to the fore - whether it’s through conservation planning, thoughtful adaptation, or making sure change happens in a way that respects the essence of a place.
I work closely with iwi, local and central government, and communities to find practical, considered ways to care for our heritage landscapes, ensuring they remain meaningful and relevant for generations to come.
Co-design is a tool by which I help deepen people’s connection to place, including children. True heritage protection isn’t just about the past - it’s about the people who engage with these places now and in the future. By working alongside communities, we gain rich insights into how these places are experienced and how their stories can continue to evolve.
My approach has shaped everything from school grounds to public spaces, ensuring that our landscapes aren’t just preserved but actively lived in and loved.
At Gather, my role is to guide these conversations, help navigate complex heritage challenges, and craft strategies that respect both history and the people who shape it.
Let’s talk about how we can bring your project to life, whether it’s protecting a place of significance, adapting a site with care, or finding ways to connect people more deeply to the landscapes around them.
I’d love to hear from you!
